6 degrees of separation
Nikhil Menon - The Times Group
ONE of society’s most primal needs is communication. Through friends, acquaintances and relations, we form a profound network of interactions that spider-webs its way to hundreds, possibly thousands, of other individuals. In the 1960s, Stanley Milgram proved that any two people can be connected to each other by six other people, thus leading to the theory ‘six degrees of separation’.

Article-Employee Self Service Application
Much to the dismay of Human Resources professionals worldwide, HR activities tend to be dominated by "administrivia" - paperwork, telephone inquiries, and drop-in visits. These demands often force HR staff members to be reactive - rather than proactive - in their pursuits. One benefit of implementing an employee self-service (ESS) application is that HR groups are freed up to play more strategic roles in their organizations.

Know Thyself
Walter E Vieira
When we talk about SWOT analysis, what we are talking about is the age-old directive given in the scriptures of every religion. Know thyself. Going further – ‘To thine own self, be true.’ And that is the essence of knowing one’s own strengths and weaknesses.

To initiate someone else blindly, is a big mistake. To try and clone, is an even bigger mistake. Yet many do it, in order to be like their boss; or to please the boss; or in the hope that it is the real path to success. And it isn’t.

Let’s get flexible!
Rahul Siddhu _ The Times Group
When was the last time you got blasted for being late to work? Do I hear, ‘almost everyday’? Well, in the complex business environment, where most bosses are just looking for just another reason to pull you down, checking in late could just add to the heat and make life worse. But there are some companies that offer a novel solution. They call it ‘flexi work timing’. What it proposes is that come in to work when you wish to, as long as work gets done. Sounds brilliant?

Mindset: a powerful booster of the performance of an organisation
Dr. Davide Sola and Dr. Jerome Couturier
Today’s economic and social environment is changing very rapidly; markets are increasingly global, deregulation is taking place everywhere, deflation (except for oil and its derivatives) is common in many sectors. The war for talent once again is at an all time high making it difficult to attract and even more difficult to retain talent. The shelf life of any product has dramatically reduced, consumers are becoming more discerning and their behaviour is increasingly unpredictable. Evidence of these changes are ever present in our daily life.

Passion for Excellence
Walter E Vieira
There is the story told of a platoon of soldiers who were on a forced march. There was great resentment. It showed on their faces. It showed in their stride. They seemed to drag themselves forward because they did not want to. They had to because they were ordered to! Yet, after the march was over, and the soldiers were now tired; but free – they had the option of going on a mountain hike; or resting in their camp. Most went on the hike; felt exhilarated by the challenge posed by the mountain; and returned late at night, tired but happy – and smiling! It is all about Passion. There are some who find passion in their occupation. They are truly blessed. Because if they have passion for their occupation; they will most likely also have a passion for excellence.

Why to outsource HR
The face of Human Resource Management has completely changed from what it used to be five years ago. No longer is it defined by providing an organization with its workforce. Today, human resource management is about making employee and organizational information accessible to all levels of the workforce, from top managerial staff to trainees. The answer to a cost effective, yet high quality solution lies in what is perceived as the single biggest trend in the HR industry today- Outsourcing.

In a perpetual quest for efficiency and cost cutting, companies are transferring traditional duties of the HR office to outside companies.
